I love you more than Netflix

Please raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimised by Valentine's Day. Perhaps your work colleague has received one too many bunches of roses and you are seriously considering whether she would notice one missing...(be honest, we’ve all been there).

Love or hate Valentine's Day you have to admit that it gives you pause to think about who you are grateful for in your life. I think Mac MacGuff from the movie Juno best described love when he said, "..in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out of your ass. That’s the kind of person that's worth sticking with."

So romantic (not!). Yet true. Far from the mushy lovey-dovey images that Valentine's Day typically evokes, this Valentine's Day got me thinking about all the real things that I appreciate about my husband (and probably don’t tell him enough). Things like his wicked sense of humour and how he makes me laugh especially when I don’t want to, how he cleans up the kitchen every night after dinner, and even when we "disagree" (ahem!) he still hugs me at the end of every day.

This Valentine's you can find ways to express your gratitude that are simple. One of the nicest and simplest Valentine's ideas I have seen is to fill a mason jar with notes about what you love or appreciate about your partner. Who doesn't enjoy a bit of flattery every now and then?

All you need is a mason jar and this label:

Simply print, stick on the jar and start filling it with little notes!

However, if you are after something a little more “manly” and you’re a DIY kinda girl, then we have the perfect quick gift solution that he will love.

You will need:

  • A tray, bucket or planter (we recommend Kmart);
  • His favourite craft beer or other preferred drink;
  • Some nibbles – nuts, chips, chocolate etc;
  • A card or gift tag

Colour coordination is key to presentation and therefore we suggest starting with the beer, and letting that set the mood for the rest of the products types and colours.

Lastly, you will need an awesome gift tag that tells it like it is:

However you choose to observe Valentine’s Day this year, BoxBetty sets you one challenge: call or write to someone you care about (be it a partner, family or friend) and let them know what they mean to you.
